So, the question at hand is whether political and social philosophy contributes to or hinders the progress of society. And really, the answer is yes. Wait, what? Yes to both? That doesn't make any sense, does it?

Well, bear with me. Political and social philosophy can absolutely contribute to the progress of society. Think about it. Some of the greatest thinkers in history were philosophers. Plato, Aristotle, Confucius, John Stuart Mill… these were all people who were deeply invested in understanding the world around them and figuring out ways to make it better. Their ideas have shaped our societies in countless ways, from the structure of our governments to the way we think about human rights.

But here's the thing. Philosophy can also be a hindrance to progress. Why? Because it can be really, really hard to change people's minds. If someone is convinced that their way of thinking is the right way, they're not going to be very interested in hearing opposing points of view. It's not always easy, and it's not always straightforward. But as long as we keep on thinking, keep on questioning, and keep on striving for something better, we'll get there eventually.
