Conversely, if a belief system prioritizes the collective over the individual, then the societal norm that emerges may emphasize the importance of community and working together.

Additionally, religious or spiritual belief systems can heavily influence societal norms. In many cultures, religious beliefs dictate practices and behaviors that are expected of individuals. For example, in certain religions, modesty is highly valued, so societal norms in those communities will reflect that value. Conversely, in societies where there is separation of church and state, societal norms may be more secular in nature.

Belief systems also influence societal norms when it comes to political ideologies. Many political beliefs are rooted in particular ideologies (e.g. conservatism, liberalism, socialism), and these ideologies have an effect on the norms and values of a society.
