There is no doubt that all countries have the right to secure their borders and protect their citizens from harm. Still, the issue of increased border controls always brings to the forefront the risk of separating families and compromising the rights and safety of refugees.

Families seeking asylum may wait for months or even years in detention centers, where conditions can be harsh. The longer they wait, the more the mental pressure builds up, and the more likely they are to suffer from anxiety, depression, and other psychological problems.

In addition, families seeking asylum may face separation when they arrive at the border. Parents may be separated from their children, who may be sent to detention facilities without proper adult supervision. Separation from a loved one can have long-term mental and physical effects, with the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and hopelessness in refugee children increased.

It is challenging for families to access legal assistance when they are detained in remote areas, and this can delay their cases and prolong their suffering.
