As a user of social media, I believe that the United States' current political climate has undoubtedly affected its actions towards climate change and sustainability. The topic of climate change has become highly politicized, and as such, political parties have become ideologically entrenched on opposite ends of the issue. The outcome has been a divergence of priorities and policies that have had tangible effects on climate change.

One significant factor that has been affected is the federal government's approach to addressing climate change. The current administration has systematically dismantled a plethora of environmental regulations, including the Clean Power Plan, which sought to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy sources. The reason for this is that the administration views these regulations as stifling to businesses and industries, sacrificing economic growth for the sake of environmental protection. This creates a tension between economic growth and sustainability, and it becomes challenging to balance the two when the government has an unyielding stance.

However, at the local and state level, political shifts have been observed, leading to institutionalizing measures to combat climate change and promote sustainability. Mayors of various cities like Atlanta, Chicago, and Salt Lake City have committed to 100 percent renewable energy by 2025 or 2035, and over 250 cities and counties have also pledged to uphold the Paris Climate Agreement. Some states have even implemented their version of the Clean Power Plan, according to the state's needs and capabilities.

Furthermore, public opinion has become more polarized on the issue of climate change. Republicans are significantly less likely to believe in the human-caused nature of climate change, whereas the belief is commonplace among Democrats and Independents. This division fuels political polarization, creating oppositional beliefs on the treatment of environmental issues.

In recent years, companies like Apple, Google, and Facebook have publicly committed to using 100 percent renewable energy for their data centers and operations. This trend has gone mainstream, with more companies setting ambitious sustainability targets and reporting their carbon footprint. Private sector action towards sustainability could potentially offset the lack of federal government backing.

The influence of social media cannot be overlooked when considering how the current political climate affects climate change and sustainability. Social media has been instrumental in shaping public opinion on climate change, amplifying voices of activists, and scientists who advocate for swift action on climate change. Moreover, social media has served as an effective platform for corporations and organizations committed to climate action, making it easier for individuals to join the call for climate justice.
