Did slavery play the biggest role in causing the American Civil War?

Slavery was undoubtedly a significant factor that contributed to the American Civil War, but it was not the sole cause. There were a variety of economic, political, and social issues that led to the conflict, and the problem of slavery was just one of many that divided the North and South.

One issue that played a major role in the Civil War was the question of states' rights versus federal power. The South believed that they had the right to secede from the Union if they chose to do so, and they saw the federal government as an entity that was trying to impose its will upon them. To the North, however, secession was illegal, and the Union could not be broken apart without causing chaos and anarchy.

Another issue that fueled the tensions between the North and South was the economic disparity between the two regions. The North was growing increasingly industrial, while the South remained an agrarian society. This led to a fundamental difference in how the two regions viewed the role of government in regulating the economy and supporting industry. The North believed that the federal government had a responsibility to promote economic growth and industrial development, while the South believed that the government should take a hands-off approach to the economy.
