What is the role of a Zen master in the practice of Zen Buddhism?
Well, from what I understand, a Zen master plays a crucial role in the practice of Zen Buddhism. In fact, they're considered to be the central figure in the whole thing.
People who wish to learn about Zen Buddhism and explore it must find a Zen master and study under them. The Zen master serves as the guide and mentor on this journey of discovering the self, enlightenment, and the ultimate truth.
The main job of the Zen master is to lead their students on the path of Zen practice. They give instructions and guidance on how to meditate, how to breathe, and how to develop mindfulness. They also provide teachings and insights on the philosophy and principles of Zen.
One of the most significant things a Zen master does is give the students koans - questions or statements that are meant to be illogical and paradoxical. Koans are designed to challenge the students' thinking and force them out of their habitual thought patterns. They're supposed to be unsolvable by logic, so the students have to rely on their intuitive and creative thinking to find an answer. The koans are believed to be a way to trigger an enlightenment experience in the student.
Apart from giving koans, the Zen master also conducts private interviews with their students called dokusan. During dokusan, the student and master meet one-on-one, and the student reports their progress and experiences in their practice to the master. The master then gives feedback and suggestions for further exploration.
Overall, the Zen master is the anchor and guidepost for the students on their Zen journey. They provide the structure and foundation for the practice, but they also know when to let go and allow the students to find their own way. They're highly respected and revered in the Zen community and are seen as embodying the Zen principles of compassion, wisdom, and enlightenment.
