How have social movements evolved alongside the development of media technology?

Throughout history, social movements have been a powerful tool to voice concerns and create change. However, with the development of media technology, social movements have evolved significantly. In this response, I will explore the evolution of social movements alongside media technology and how they have impacted each other.

In the past, social movements relied on physical gatherings and grassroots organizing to gain momentum. However, the rise of mass media, specifically television, in the mid-20th century changed the game. Television allowed social movements to broadcast their messages to a larger audience, reaching people who may not have been aware or interested in the cause. The Civil Rights movement in the United States is a prime example of this. Through TV news coverage, Americans across the country were able to witness the horrific violence and discrimination faced by African Americans, leading to broader support for the movement.
