For example, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been hugely successful, with each movie building on the next and all of them connecting to create a big story. This has brought in a lot of money for the movie studios that make the movies.

On the other hand, there are also successful movies that are not part of a franchise or have any sequels. Some examples of this are Titanic, Avatar, and The Dark Knight. These movies were hugely successful without having any sequels or being part of a franchise. So, it's possible for movies to be successful without sequels or franchises.

However, movie studios often like to make sequels and franchises because they already know that the first movie was successful, and they hope that people will come back to watch the new movies. This can be good for the movie studios, but it can also mean that they are not taking risks with new stories.
