Over time, running evolved and became more popular. In the 1800s, the marathon was created as a race that was 26.2 miles long, which is the distance between the Greek cities of Marathon and Athens. The marathon was made famous in 1908 when an Italian runner named Dorando Pietri collapsed near the finish line and had to be helped across by officials. The race was controversial, but it brought attention to the sport of running and made the marathon even more popular.

In the 1960s and 70s, there was a running boom in the United States. People started to realize the health benefits of running and began to participate in events like 5Ks and 10Ks. Running also became a way for people to raise money for charity and to bring awareness to important causes.

Today, running is still a popular form of exercise and competition. There are races for every distance, from a 100-meter sprint to ultra-marathons that are over 100 miles long! Runners can also participate in fun runs, color runs, and obstacle course races.

Running has also evolved with technology. In the past, runners would have to keep track of their time and distance by using a stopwatch and counting their laps. Now, runners can use GPS watches and apps on their phones to track their progress.
