When the sport of bobsleigh was first introduced to the Olympics, four-man teams competed in the event. It wasn't until the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid that the two-man bobsleigh event was added. Both events have since been a fixture of the Winter Olympics, with women's bobsleigh being added to the program in 2002.

Over the years, bobsleigh has developed into a highly technical and specialized sport. The sleds used in competition are constructed with high-tech materials like carbon fiber and equipped with blades on the underside that allow them to glide effortlessly over the ice. The sport also demands a high level of physical fitness and skill, with teams needing to work together seamlessly to achieve success.

One of the most famous moments in bobsleigh history took place during the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. During the four-man competition, the Jamaican bobsleigh team made its debut, becoming the first team from a tropical nation to compete in the sport. Though they didn't win a medal, the Jamaican bobsledders captured the hearts of spectators worldwide and inspired the hit movie "Cool Runnings."

In more recent years, bobsleigh has faced some controversy over issues of safety and fairness. In 2014, during the Winter Olympics in Sochi, several athletes were injured in crashes during the competition. Additionally, there have been concerns over the use of technology in sled construction, with some teams accused of gaining an unfair advantage through equipment modifications.
