As a devoted TV aficionado, the question of which show from the past is the most overrated is a tough one. While many shows could fit the bill, there is one that particularly sticks out: Friends.

Now, before all the Friends lovers grab their pitchforks, let me explain. Friends was undoubtedly a cultural phenomenon and trailblazer of its time, but the hype surrounding it has only grown stronger with time. It's hard to escape the constant merchandise, reruns, and even Friends-themed cafés and pop-up experiences. The show has become more of a brand than a beloved television show.

But when you strip away the nostalgia and the branding, is Friends really as amazing as we all think it is? The answer is no. While the show has its comedic moments and a stellar cast, it's really just a sitcom with friends who sit around their favorite coffee shop every day and talk about their love lives. The show often lacks depth and instead relies on cheesy one-liners and recycled jokes.

Let's not forget about the problematic elements of the show, too. The lack of diversity in the cast and storylines often leads to tone-deaf jokes and tired stereotypes. Ross, in particular, is a character that has aged poorly with his sexist and controlling behavior towards women.

Furthermore, the show's lasting impact on pop culture has been questionable. While it may have paved the way for other successful shows in its genre, it also perpetuated the idea that wealthy, white people living in New York City were the only ones worth watching on television. It's a narrow-minded view that has plagued the industry for far too long.
