Can too many rhetorical devices in a text be overwhelming for readers?

As a social media user, I have come across a vast array of texts that utilize several rhetorical devices. Rhetorical devices are tools of language that help convey a message persuasively. Examples of these devices include metaphors, similes, hyperboles, alliterations, amongst others.

However, over time, I have observed that some writers tend to overuse these devices, which can become overwhelming for readers.

On one hand, rhetorical devices can make texts more captivating, entertaining, and convincing. When an author employs these tools, they can evoke emotions in readers, making them more likely to engage with the text. The clever use of metaphors or similes can be particularly effective in making the author's point clear without being too didactic.

On the other hand, an excessive use of rhetorical devices can create confusion, making the text harder to read and comprehend. When an author is only focused on using these devices, they may forget to use simple and straightforward language. Using convoluted and excessive language may lead to misinterpretation.

In essence, the use of rhetorical devices in texts should be balanced. An author should strive to use only the required number of devices to drive home their point but must also ensure that they're not overdoing it. The main focus should be on making the text as clear as possible.

For instance, if a writer is crafting a persuasive argument, they may decide to employ rhetorical devices to reinforce their position. However, if the use of these devices gets in the way of the author's argument, then it might be best to keep them to a minimum.
