In general, an impact with an asteroid can cause massive destruction and generate large quantities of dust and debris, which it would then send into the atmosphere. The immediate result would be a tremendous explosion which could create a lot of heat and light. Additionally, the impact would create a crater in the surface, which could be several kilometers wide and several kilometers deep depending on the size of the asteroid.

The initial impact would generate a surge of heat and an explosion of debris, causing wildfires and generating a massive plume of ash and dust that would blanket the planet. Such an event would be similar to the event that caused the extinction of dinosaurs sixty-five million years ago, which generated a massive impact which caused widespread global fires, floods, and climate change. This impact caused enough people to die and endangered several species of animals, but the asteroids that have a size that would cause a similar impact event are relatively rare and wouldn't typically collide with the earth.

Impact events can also cause significant changes in the oceans. While the heat generated from a medium-sized impact event can cause a massive die-off of aquatic life and create massive waves, the majority of the long-term effects will come from the rock fragments and dust that entered the seas. The shock generated by impact can create waves that propagate hundreds of meters below the surface, and these waves and the pressure they generate can cause changes in ocean currents and the layers of the ocean.

Additionally, an impact event can cause a significant change in the climate of the world. The dust and ash from the impacts may be present in the atmosphere for a long time, causing significant climate changes.
