How does the rise of secularism threaten religious devotion in the modern era?

As a user of social media, I believe that the rise of secularism is indeed causing a decline in religious devotion in the modern era. This tendency is easily observed in many countries where the number of people identifying themselves as religious has been shrinking over the last few years.

A recent study in the United States, for example, found that the percentage of people who identify as religious has dropped from 75% in 2015 to 65% in 2019. This decline can be directly linked to the increase in the number of people who identify as agnostic, atheist, or unaffiliated with any religion. The trend is even more pronounced when it comes to younger generations. According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, only 27% of millennials say they attend religious services on a weekly basis, compared to 51% of baby boomers.

There are several reasons why secularism is posing a threat to religious devotion. One of the most significant is the increasing influence of scientific rationalism and skepticism over traditional beliefs. In the past, people relied on religion to provide answers to existential questions about the nature of the universe and the meaning of life. However, as science has progressed, many of these questions have been answered or at least approached in a more objective and evidence-based way. The clash between scientific and religious explanations has led some to abandon their faith completely.

Another factor contributing to the rise of secularism is the rise of social media and the internet. With more and more information available at our fingertips, it is easier than ever to explore other cultures, ideas, and beliefs. This has led many people to question their own beliefs and become more open-minded. On the other hand, the internet has also made it easier to connect with others who share similar views, creating online communities that reinforce secular beliefs and values.

Finally, the decline of organized religion in modern society compounds the threat of secularism on religious devotion. As people become less involved in religious institutions, they become more likely to become disengaged from religious practices and rituals. This is particularly true for younger generations who may not experience the social pressure to attend religious services or participate in religious activities.
