How have the Olympic rings been used in advertising campaigns during the games?
Oh, let me tell you how the Olympic rings have been used in advertising campaigns during the games! It's been a wild ride, my friend.
First of all, we know that everyone gets super hyped about the Olympics. The athletes, the competitions, the excitement - it's contagious! And advertisers know it. So, what better way to tap into that hype than with the iconic Olympic rings?
One of the most famous uses of the rings in advertising was back in 1992, when the Barcelona Olympics were held. Coca-Cola released an ad campaign featuring a group of kids playing soccer, and when they take a break, they see the Olympic rings formed in the sky by a group of planes. It was epic.
Since then, we've seen all kinds of creative uses of the rings. Some advertisers use them in their logos and branding leading up to the games, like McDonald's did with their "I'm Lovin' It" campaign during the 2012 London Olympics.
Others have gotten even more creative, like Samsung did during the 2016 Rio Olympics. They put together a commercial featuring a bunch of different Olympic sports, and as the athletes compete, they leave trails of color behind them that eventually form the Olympic rings.
But my personal favorite use of the rings in advertising came from Duracell during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. They released an ad featuring U.S. bobsledder David Cripps and his family, all wearing headlamps powered by Duracell batteries. As they race down the track, the headlamps form the Olympic rings in the darkness. It was both practical and visually stunning - a perfect combination.
So, all in all, there have been some seriously cool uses of the Olympic rings in advertising campaigns during the games. And who knows what we'll see in the future - I'm sure advertisers will find even more creative ways to tap into that Olympic hype.
