Although Christmas is celebrated as the birth of Jesus Christ by Christians around the world, its roots stretch back to pagan celebrations of the winter solstice. The Roman festival of Saturnalia, which was held in honor of the god Saturn, took place around the time of the solstice and involved feasting, gift-giving, and merry-making. Similarly, the Celtic festival of Yule, which was held at the same time of year, involved feasting and gift-giving, as well as the lighting of candles and the burning of yule logs.

Another holiday with ancient origins is Easter, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Like Christmas, Easter has roots in ancient pagan rituals, particularly the springtime festivals of fertility and new life. The name "Easter" is derived from Eostre, an ancient Germanic goddess associated with fertility and the dawn. Similarly, the tradition of decorating eggs at Easter has its roots in pagan rituals, as eggs were seen as symbols of fertility and rebirth.
