How important is student engagement in the classroom and why?

Student engagement is one of the key elements that determine the success of learning in the classroom. It is not only crucial for the students to participate and engage in the class, but it is also essential for the teachers to make a conscious effort to involve all the students in their learning. As a student who has witnessed both sides of the spectrum, I can confidently say that an engaged classroom is a driven classroom.

So, why is student engagement so important? The answer is simple. Engaged students are motivated students, and motivated students are productive students. When a student is engaged in a class, they are more likely to absorb the content taught, ask questions, and engage in discussions. In the process, they start to comprehend the information and learn to apply it to the broader context. Engagement in class creates an environment where students are curious, captivated, and invested in their academics.

On the other hand, disengaged students show tendencies to lag behind and ultimately give up on their learning. These students are often disinterested, may skip classes, and do not participate in class discussions. They do not see the value in their academics and fail to make connections between what is taught in class and its practical relevance. Moreover, the lack of motivation and interest may lead to deteriorating grades and hinder the growth and development of the student.

As a student, I can confidently say teachers play a fundamental role in creating an engaged classroom. They play a crucial part in making the class exciting, thought-provoking, and making students excited about learning. Innovative teaching techniques that incorporate technology and other interactive tools can help instil a love for academic learning. Furthermore, a teacher who is passionate about their subject and engages their student allows for open dialogue and encourages critical thinking, driving an engaged classroom.

To conclude, a creative and stimulating classroom is what all students need. In a world where traditional lectures and textbook learning may seem outdated, it is imperative that the classroom atmosphere is constantly reinvented to make it dynamic and interesting. An engaged classroom creates an environment where students and teachers learn together, exchange ideas and challenge their intellect. When both teachers and students put in the effort required to keep the class engaging, it is a win-win situation for all parties- the student, teacher, and the learning community as a whole.
