There is no denying that there has been a significant disparity in gender representation in athletics and individual sports throughout history. However, we are now living in an era where women are not just making strides in these areas but are breaking through glass ceilings at an alarming rate. The gender gap is slowly fading away, and the same is visible in sports. Women are now participating in sports that were once deemed exclusively for men and excelling in them.

Historically, women were not encouraged to participate in sports or engage in any physical activity. This created a significant gap in gender representation in athletics and individual sports. Men dominated the sports world, while women were left with fewer opportunities to showcase their skills. Even until now, there are discrepancies in pay, opportunities and media coverage for female athletes that continue to leave something to be desired. However, we must recognize that progress is being made.

In recent years, women have broken through to numerous sports previously dominated by men. An excellent example is the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup where the United States women's national soccer team dominated and claimed their fourth title. The Women’s National Basketball Association, Women’s National Hockey League, Women’s National Lacrosse League, and Ultimate Fighting Championship have also provided more visibility to and created more opportunities for female athletes. In addition, Alex Morgan, Serena Williams, and Megan Rapinoe have become household names around the world.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has also taken significant strides in addressing gender inequality. The IOC has introduced mixed-gender events, increasing opportunities for women to participate, and equalizing the number of events for men and women. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the IOC estimated that 48.8% of over 11,000 athletes were women, which was a significant increase from the previous Olympics. This serves as a push for women to get involved in sports and pursue their dreams.

In conclusion, while there has been a significant disparity in gender representation in athletics and individual sports, there has been progress in recent years. Women are excelling in sports and gender equity is being promoted through initiatives introduced by sporting organizations. However, there is still work to be done to level the playing field completely. We need to keep supporting and providing opportunities for women, recognising the talent and hard work required to succeed in sports, and continue to create spaces for women to lead and thrive in sports.
