In 1995, the Canadian government passed the Firearms Act which was designed to remove firearms from homes where they pose a risk in domestic violence. It also established standard training and testing for those obtaining firearms and required a background check to be conducted before purchasing a firearm. Furthermore, handguns and automatic weapons are classified as "restricted" and "prohibited" in Canada and are tightly regulated. Canadian gun laws are supported by both the government and the public, with surveys showing that 85% of Canadians support gun control measures.

In contrast, the United States has significantly looser gun control laws due to the Second Amendment stating that citizens have the right to bear arms. Gun rights advocates believe that the right to bear arms is necessary for self-protection and to prevent government tyranny. However, many critics argue that the high number of gun-related deaths in the United States, including mass shootings, is evidence that stricter laws are necessary. The US also has a large and well-funded gun lobby, the National Rifle Association (NRA), that heavily influences government policy. Efforts to tighten gun control laws in the US have been met with opposition from the NRA and gun rights supporters.

The Mexican government has attempted to crack down on illegal gun sales and trafficking, including efforts to strengthen border security. However, these efforts have been met with limited success due to the high demand for guns in Mexico.

In Canada and Mexico, the government has been able to implement strict gun laws due to the popularity of these policies among the public.
