What can be done to improve urban design in overcrowded cities?

As an avid urban design enthusiast, I strongly believe that the key to improving overcrowded cities lies in implementing the concept of vertical living.

In essence, this would involve the construction of towering skyscrapers that would serve as self-contained communities within themselves, complete with residential units, commercial spaces, recreational areas, and green spaces. The benefits of such a model are manifold. By utilizing vertical space more efficiently, we can create more living space for a greater number of people, without the need to sprawl outwards and consume more land. Additionally, vertical living offers a myriad of advantages in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency. Vertical cities can potentially generate their own power through renewable sources such as wind turbines and solar panels, and reduce the need for long-distance transportation by clustering different aspects of daily life in close proximity.

Of course, the idea of living in a towering skyscraper may seem daunting to many, and it is true that urban design must be tailored to meet the needs and desires of its inhabitants. However, it is essential to recognize that in many overcrowded cities, the existing infrastructure simply cannot accommodate the population without sacrificing quality of life. This is why, in my view, we must embrace new and innovative solutions to the challenges of urban planning.

There will be those who argue that this model is not feasible for a variety of reasons, citing everything from building codes to psychological studies on the effect of high-rise living on mental health. However, I believe that these objections can be overcome with careful planning and a dedication to creating spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. By marshalling the best minds in design and architecture, we can create vibrant vertical communities that are attractive to residents and outsiders alike.

Perhaps most importantly, the concept of vertical living represents a fundamental shift in how we think about urban design. Rather than seeing cities as static entities that must grow indefinitely outwards, we must embrace the idea that they can be dynamic and adaptive to changing circumstances. This requires a willingness to rethink traditional approaches to urban planning, and to challenge ourselves to embrace the opportunities presented by new technologies and design innovations.

In closing, I would argue that the key to improving overcrowded cities lies in recognizing that conventional approaches are no longer sufficient.
