Tavernier brought the diamond to France, where he sold it to King Louis XIV in 1668. The king had the diamond cut to eliminate some of its flaws and recut again in 1673. The newly cut diamond weighed 67.50 carats and was named the French Blue.

In 1749, the French Blue came into the possession of King Louis XV, who ordered it to be set into a necklace. The necklace was worn to the coronation of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, but the necklace and diamond were stolen during the French Revolution.

After the diamond disappeared, it reappeared in the late 1800s in London and was purchased by a wealthy banker named Henry Thomas Hope. Hope owned the diamond for 20 years, hence the name, before passing it to his family. From there, it was sold to various buyers, including Pierre Cartier of Cartier Jewelers.

The diamond remained in her family's possession until it was sold to Harry Winston, a famous jeweler, in 1949. Winston then donated the Hope Diamond to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

The diamond has been on display at the Smithsonian since then and is one of the museum's most popular attractions. It has been featured in numerous books and movies, including the popular film, Titanic.
