Is political representation a necessary component of a democratic society?

Political representation is undoubtedly a crucial aspect of a democratic society. It serves as the bridge between the citizens and the government, allowing individuals to voice their concerns and needs while electing individuals who can represent them at the decision-making table. However, merely having political representation does not guarantee a democratic society. The quality of representation, the inclusivity of its people, and the legitimacy of the government are equally critical components.

At the onset, representation should be inclusive and cater to all individuals within the society, not just the elites. In many cases, the elites control the political scene, leaving the masses underrepresented and without a voice. The government should ensure that everyone has a chance to participate in the electoral process and not limit the representation to a select few. For example, the United States' political system relies heavily on money and power, limiting the voice of those without resources. This leads to an unfair representation and an undemocratic society.

Furthermore, representation should not stop at the point of the election. The elected officials must always be available to the constituents, listen to their needs, and work for the betterment of society. In many cases, politicians make promises during campaigns only to abandon their supporters once in power. This leads to disenfranchisement and disengagement of the people, ultimately leading to the erosion of democracy.

Finally, representation should ensure the legitimacy and accountability of the government. It is worth noting that representation does not guarantee a competent government, but good representation ensures that the officials are answerable to the people.
