As a avid backpacker and traveler, I have been fortunate enough to explore many countries and destinations around the world. However, if there is one place that I believe is the most overrated backpacking destination, it's undoubtedly Thailand.
Now, before you jump to any conclusions, let me explain why. Thailand is undoubtedly a beautiful country with rich culture, history, and stunning scenery. It's true that it has some of the best beaches and islands in the world, and the food is delicious. Not to mention, the people are incredibly friendly and welcoming.
But the problem with Thailand is that it's become too popular and overcrowded with tourists. It has lost its authenticity and charm, and the backpacking experience is not what it used to be. The streets are congested with tuk-tuks and scooters, and the noise can be overwhelming. The beautiful beaches are now crowded with tourists, and the paradise-like islands are now littered with trash.
Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying that Thailand is terrible or not worth your time. What I'm saying is that it's not the idyllic backpacking destination it once was. Nowadays, traveling to Thailand feels more like ticking off a bucket list item than an adventure.
Moreover, Thailand has become more expensive than it used to be. Accommodation, food, and transportation prices have increased significantly, making it harder for budget travelers to make ends meet. This is especially true if you're traveling during peak season, and finding a cheap place to stay can be a real challenge.
So, what's the solution? If you're still dead-set on backpacking in Thailand, my advice would be to avoid the overly touristy areas and towns. Instead, head to the lesser-known destinations, which are equally as beautiful and welcoming but far less crowded. My personal favorite is Pai, a small town in the north, nestled among green mountains and valleys. The locals are incredibly friendly, and the town has a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere.
In conclusion, Thailand is not the backpacking paradise it's cracked up to be. While it has some stunning scenery and culture, the tourism industry has taken over, and the experience is not what it used to be. If you're looking for an authentic backpacking adventure, there are many other countries out there that offer a far better experience.
