Hey friends! Are you as fascinated by Medieval history as I am? Well, let me tell you, the art from that time period is just as captivating! I’ve rounded up some of the most famous Medieval art pieces for you all to check out.
First up, we have the magnificent Bayeux Tapestry. This incredible work of art is an embroidered linen cloth that spans approximately 230 feet long and depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England in 1066. It’s insane to think about how long it must have taken to create this masterpiece! Plus, the intricate details are absolutely stunning.
Next, we have the breathtaking Book of Kells. This illuminated manuscript contains the four gospels of the New Testament and is believed to have been created in the late eighth or early ninth century. The pages are filled with stunning illustrations and intricately detailed lettering that will leave you in awe. Fun fact, it’s housed at Trinity College Library in Dublin so if you’re ever in the area, make sure to check it out!
Another one of my favorites is the stunning stained glass windows at Chartres Cathedral in France. These windows date back to the 12th and 13th centuries and the bright colors and intricate designs are simply mesmerizing. My favorite window depicts the Tree of Jesse which shows the family tree of Jesus. It’s truly something you have to see in person to fully appreciate.
And who could forget about the iconic unicorn tapestries? These seven tapestries were created in the late 15th century and are now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. They depict the hunt and capture of a unicorn, a mythical creature believed to have healing powers. The symbolism and imagery in these tapestries are truly fascinating and make for a great conversation starter.
Last but not least, we have the stunning illuminated manuscripts of the Durham Cathedral. Known as the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Durham Book, these manuscripts date back to the 7th and 8th centuries and are filled with intricate illustrations and beautifully written text. I can’t even begin to imagine the patience and skill it took to create such masterpieces!
