Poverty and social inequality are things that can really affect how boys and girls, men and women see themselves and what they think they can do. This is true even in countries where people have a lot of money and things are generally good, like in developed nations.

One way poverty and inequality can affect gender roles is by making it harder for men and women to see themselves as equal. Imagine for a moment that you are a boy and you live in a family where your mom works really hard and your dad stays at home. If people around you always say things like "men should be the ones working" or "women shouldn't be in charge", you might start to think that your family is doing something wrong. You might think that your dad isn't a "real man" because he doesn't work, or that your mom shouldn't be doing a "man's job". This can be really confusing and hurtful, especially if you love both your parents and think they are doing the best they can.

Another way poverty and inequality can affect gender roles is by limiting what people think they can do with their lives. If you are a girl and you see other girls like you dropping out of school to get married or have babies, you might start to think that this is the only thing you can do too. Even if you want to be a doctor or a scientist, you might think that it's not possible because you're a girl and girls are supposed to be mothers and wives. This is called a "gender stereotype" and it can be really harmful because it assumes that all boys and all girls are the same and should want the same things.

Finally, poverty and inequality can affect gender roles by making it harder for people to get the resources they need to be successful. For example, if there are more boys than girls going to school or getting good jobs, this might mean that the girls don't have the same opportunities to learn or make money. If you are a boy, this might not seem like a big deal to you because you are not being left behind.
