Early pioneers such as Z-Boys and Dogtown skaters paved the way for modern skateboarding by introducing maneuvers like aerials, slides, and flip tricks. Skateboarding's popularity continued to grow throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and by the early 2000s, it had become a mainstream sport.

In contrast, football has been around for a much longer period.
