In the United Kingdom, individuals suspected of being involved in terrorism can be detained for up to 14 days without being charged.

While some argue that preemptive detention is necessary to prevent terrorist attacks, others argue that it is a violation of human rights and civil liberties. Critics of the practice argue that it is difficult to determine who should be detained, as it requires assumptions about what a person may do in the future. This could lead to the detention of innocent individuals without evidence of wrongdoing.
