How do antioxidants really work to combat free radicals and prevent oxidative stress in our bodies?
Antioxidants are like superheroes that fight against bad guys called free radicals. Free radicals are tiny particles that can harm our bodies, kind of like how a mosquito can bite us and make us itchy. But instead of making us itchy, free radicals can damage cells and cause problems like aging and diseases.
Antioxidants work to fight against these bad guys by neutralizing them. Think of it like throwing a bucket of water on a fire to put it out. Antioxidants can do the same thing for free radicals. They stop the free radicals from causing more damage, kind of like how firefighters stop a fire from spreading.
When we eat healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, we get lots of antioxidants that help our bodies stay healthy. Some of the most common antioxidants are vitamins A, C, and E. They can be found in foods like carrots, oranges, almonds, and spinach.
So, by eating healthy foods and getting plenty of antioxidants, we can help our bodies stay strong and fight against the bad guys, just like superheroes!
