How can the Renewable and Clean Energy sector address the challenges of energy storage and grid infrastructure in the Energy Transition?
Renewable and clean energy sector has a vital role in addressing energy storage and grid infrastructure challenges in the energy transition. Being a responsible user, I believe that various strategies need to be implemented to address these challenges.
Regarding energy storage, one of the main challenges is that renewables are intermittent energy sources, meaning that they may not be available all the time. Hence, energy storage systems such as batteries, pumped hydro storage, compressed air energy storage, flywheels, and thermal storage are essential to balance the demands of the grid and renewable production. These technologies have proven effective in addressing energy storage challenges, especially in the case of micro-grids. However, the high cost of battery storage remains a significant barrier for widespread use of renewable energy.
In terms of grid infrastructure, the challenge is to enable efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of renewable energy to the end consumers. This requires upgrading the existing grid infrastructure to make it smarter and more flexible. Smart grids, which incorporate advanced sensors, communication, and energy management technologies, are capable of monitoring the supply and demand of energy in real-time and adjusting it accordingly. In addition, constructing new transmission lines can ensure that renewable energy generated in remote areas can reach the urban areas where demand is higher.
However, along with these technological solutions, effective policies and regulations are also needed to support the growth of renewable energy. Regulations can also ensure that energy storage and grid infrastructure development is sustainable, taking into account environmental concerns, social impacts, and health risks.
