In my opinion, people who have suffered from mental illness can definitely be better equipped to help others in their recovery. There are a few reasons why I believe this to be true.

When you've experienced something first-hand, you have a deeper understanding of how it feels and what the challenges are. This means you're more likely to be able to empathize with others and truly understand what they're going through.

As a result, you're likely to be more proactive about seeking help and encouraging others to do the same.
